RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effect of combined training (CT) in postural control and gait parameters in postmenopausal women. METHODS: A parallel-group, randomized, control study was conducted with 16 weeks of combined training (n = 16) versus a non-training control group (n = 12) in postmenopausal women (aged 59.3 ± 8.0). Pre and postintervention assessments included postural control (using an AMTI force platform - Advanced Mechanical Technology, Inc., Watertown, MA, USA) and gait impairments (using baropodometry). In addition, the upper limb strength and abdominal tests, as well as aerobic capacity, assessed functional indicators. RESULTS: The CT intervention in postmenopausal women resulted in improved gait (stride length (p = 0.006); speed (p = 0.013); double support time (p = 0.045); and improved postural control (displacement area of postural sway in a normal base of support with eyes open (p = 0.006). Combined training increased functional indicators (abdominal - p = 0.031; aerobic capacity - p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, combined aerobic plus strength training effectively improved gait and balance control in older women. The postmenopausal women from the CT group walked faster and with bigger steps after the intervention than the control group. In addition, they presented decreased postural sway in standing and decreased the percentage of double support time while walking, which means improved static and dynamic balance control and functional indicators.

Liver steatosis is one of the main drivers for the development of whole-body insulin resistance. Conversely, aerobic training (AT) has been suggested as non-pharmacological tool to improve liver steatosis, however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of 8-weeks AT in non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) outcomes in obese mice. Male C57BL/6 J wild type (WT) were fed with standard (SD) or high-fat diet (HFD) for 12-weeks. Another group fed with HFD underwent 8-weeks of AT (60% of maximum velocity), initiated at the 5th week of experimental protocol. We measured metabolic, body composition parameters, protein and gene expression inflammatory and metabolic mediators. We found that AT attenuates the weight gain, but not body fat accumulation. AT improved triacylglycerol and non-esterified fatty acid plasma concentrations, and also whole-body insulin resistance. Regarding NAFLD, AT decreased the progression of macrovesicular steatosis and inflammation through the upregulation of AMPK Thr172 phosphorylation and PPAR-α protein expression. Moreover, although no effects of intervention in PPAR-γ protein concentration were observed, we found increased levels of its target genes Cd36 and Scd1 in exercised group, demonstrating augmented transcriptional activity. AT reduced liver cytokines concentrations, such as TNF-α, IL-10, MCP-1 and IL-6, regardless of increased Ser536 NF-κB phosphorylation. In fact, none of the interventions regulated NF-κB target genes Il1b and Cccl2, demonstrating its low transcriptional activity. Therefore, we conclude that AT attenuates the progression of liver macrovesicular steatosis and inflammation through AMPK-PPAR-α signaling and PPAR-γ activation, respectively, improving insulin resistance in obese mice.

RESUMEN

The pathogenesis of muscle atrophy plays a central role in cancer cachexia, and chemotherapy contributes to this condition. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of endurance exercise on time-dependent muscle atrophy caused by doxorubicin. For this, C57 BL/6 mice were subcutaneously inoculated with Lewis lung carcinoma cells (LLC group). One week after the tumor establishment, a group of these animals initiated the doxorubicin chemotherapy alone (LLC + DOX group) or combined with endurance exercise (LLC + DOX + EXER group). One group of animals was euthanized after the chemotherapy cycle, whereas the remaining animals were euthanized one week after the last administration of doxorubicin. The practice of exercise combined with chemotherapy showed beneficial effects such as a decrease in tumor growth rate after chemotherapy interruption and amelioration of premature death due to doxorubicin toxicity. Moreover, the protein degradation levels in mice undergoing exercise returned to basal levels after chemotherapy; in contrast, the mice treated with doxorubicin alone experienced an increase in the mRNA expression levels of the proteolytic pathways in gastrocnemius muscle (Trim63, Fbxo32, Myostatin, FoxO). Collectively, our results suggest that endurance exercise could be utilized during and after chemotherapy for mitigating muscle atrophy promoted by doxorubicin and avoid the resumption of tumor growth.

RESUMEN

The aim this study was to analyze the association between insufficient physical activity and dysmobility syndrome (DS) in community-dwelling older adults. In total, 375 subjects were evaluated aged ≥60 years. For the diagnosis of DS the presence of ≥3 clinical factors was considered: (a) low muscle mass; (b) low muscular strength; (c) low gait speed; (d) high body fat, and (e) osteoporosis. Information relating to the practice of habitual physical activity (HPA) was obtained using a questionnaire and accelerometry. The chi-square test was used to verify the association between HPA and DS and analysis of binary logistic regression to build multiple models. Insufficiently active older adults are approximately 2 times (95% confidence interval, 1.14-3.79) more likely to have DS, independent of body mass index, smoking and ethnicity. The insufficient practice of physical activity is associated with DS in older adults, mainly in women and older.

RESUMEN

Aging is one of the risk factors for the development of low-grade inflammation morbidities, such as several types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, due to changes in the metabolism, hormonal secretion, and immunosenescence. The senescence of the immune system leads to improper control of infections and tissue damage increasing age-related diseases. One of the mechanisms that maintain cellular homeostasis is autophagy, a cell-survival mechanism, and it has been proposed as one of the most powerful antiaging therapies. Regular exercise can reestablish autophagy, probably through AMP-activated protein kinase activation, and help in reducing the age-related senescence diseases. Therefore, in this study, we discuss the effects of exercise training in immunosenescence and autophagy, preventing the two main age-related disease, cancer and neurodegeneration.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between total and segmental bone mineral density (BDM) and physical activity (PA) in different domains (school, leisure and sports) among adolescents and children. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study in the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP). METHODS: The study sample consisted of 173 children and adolescents (10.31 ± 1.87 years). The BMDs for the whole body (WB) and the regions of the trunk and legs were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). PA was measured using the Baecke questionnaire. A regression model was used to analyze the relationship between all the BMDs and the different domains of PA. RESULTS: 41.5% of the adolescents had high percentages of body fat. Regarding the comparison between physically active and insufficiently active adolescents, there were no statistically significant differences in any BMD variables (P > 0.05). The BMD of the legs showed positive relationships with the total PA (β = 0.009; P = 0.013) and sports PA (β = 0.010; P = 0.049) after insertion of the confounders. Similarly, the WB BMD showed the same relationships (total PA: β = 0.005; P = 0.045; and sports PA: β = 0.008; P = 0.049). No relationship was found between leisure and school PA and any of the BMDs (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results indicated that practice of sport was related to higher BMD values, independent of sex, age and body fatness.

Abstract It is not yet clear which physical exercise protocols have greater potential to mitigate the functional decline in physical fitness (coordination, flexibility, strength, agility and cardiorespiratory capacity). Thus, the objective of this study was to compare different training modalities on physical fitness in women over 50 years of age and understand which training protocol is more effective for promoting significant improvements in physical fitness. The initial sample consisted of 79 subjects, of which 17 dropped out, resulting in a total of 62 subjects who completed the study and are included in the analysis (n = 62). The average age of the study population was 60.1±5.4 years, divided into five groups: aerobic training, concurrent training, multimodal training, functional training and control group. Physical fitness was analyzed through AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) tests (0 and eighth weeks). The ANOVA analyses (aleatory effect) show a main effect of time for coordination (p<0.001), strength (p = 0.004), agility (p<0.001) and cardiorespiratory capacity (p<0.001), and statistically significant interactions for coordination (p = 0.003) and cardiorespiratory capacity (p = 0.033). When comparing the average relative differences between the group (Δ%), significant improvement was observed in coordination and agility (p<0.001) in the multimodal and functional training groups. For cardiorespiratory fitness, there was a significant improvement in the aerobic, concurrent and multimodal training groups (p<0.001) and strength increased in the functional training group (p = 0.04). Functional training was demonstrated to be more effective at promoting significant improvements in physical fitness than the other investigated exercise protocols.

RESUMEN

The aim of present study was to compare blood lipid postprandial profile response in two modes of high-intensity intermittent exercise. Twelve individuals (6 men and 6 women) were submitted to a maximal incremental test (to determine maximal aerobic power [MAP] and V. O2peak [peak oxygen uptake]), high-intensity intermittent all-out exercise (60×8-sec bouts interspersed by 12-sec passive recovery) and fixed high-intensity intermittent exercise (100% maximal aerobic speed, consisted of 1-min repetitions at MAP [70 rpm] separated by 1-min of passive recovery). Blood samples were collected pre, immediately, 45 and 90-min postexercise. Serum was analyzed for total cholesterol and its ratio, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, and triacylglycerol (TAG). For TAG there was a main effect of moment with higher values immediately postexercise compared to 45-min postexercise. For VLDL there was a main effect to moment with higher values immediately post exercise than pre and 45-min postexercise; higher values 90-min postexercise than 45-min postexercise. There was no effect for HDL-c, LDL-c, and cholesterol. For area under the curve there was no difference for any variable. Our results indicated that both kinds of acute exercise session lead to no improvement in the acute response of serum lipid profile of healthy young.

RESUMEN

Inflammatory markers are increased systematically and locally (e.g., skeletal muscle) in stroke patients. Besides being associated with cardiovascular risk factors, proinflammatory cytokines seem to play a key role in muscle atrophy by regulating the pathways involved in this condition. As such, they may cause severe decrease in muscle strength and power, as well as impairment in cardiorespiratory fitness. On the other hand, physical exercise (PE) has been widely suggested as a powerful tool for treating stroke patients, since PE is able to regenerate, even if partially, physical and cognitive functions. However, the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of physical exercise in poststroke patients remain poorly understood. Thus, in this study we analyze the candidate mechanisms associated with muscle atrophy in stroke patients, as well as the modulatory effect of inflammation in this condition. Later, we suggest the two strongest anti-inflammatory candidate mechanisms, myokines and the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, which may be activated by physical exercise and may contribute to a decrease in proinflammatory markers of poststroke patients.

RESUMEN

Abstract Different types of physical activity programs have been used with the purpose of improving body composition and increasing resting energy expenditure (REE) in obese adolescents. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of two training models on REE and body composition in this population. The study included 20 obese male adolescents, who were randomly assigned to follow two training models: strength training (n=8, age=13,4±1.0) and functional training (n=12, age= 13.0±1.1). Body composition variables were estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. REE was assessed by indirect calorimetry using the QUARK-PFT equipment (COSMED, Rome, Italy). The training protocol consisted of 30 minutes of aerobic training followed by 30 minutes of strength training (ST) or functional training (FT), both with a duration of 20 weeks. There were no significant differences between the two training models with regard to body composition (fat mass, FT= -7.6±5.5% vs. ST= -8.9±6.2%; p=0.620), (lean body mass, FT= 9.0±5.3% vs. ST= 6.8±6.7%; p=0.431) and to REE (FT= 19.6±15.3% vs. ST= 10.7±24.5%; p=0.331). Moreover, lean body mass (p=0.01) and fat mass (0.01) had an influence on REE. No differences were observed between the two training models, but both were effective in improving body composition and increasing REE in obese adolescents. Furthermore, the present study showed the importance of systematic physical training, since lean body mass and fat mass contributed to the increase in REE after the training period.

Abstract The aim of this study was to propose the normative table for the non-active postmenopausal Brazilian population composed of women aged 50-69 years through the AAHPERD functional fitness test battery. This is a cross-sectional study with 170 postmenopausal women (FSH dose> 26.72 mIU / L). The population was divided into two groups: 50-59 years (n = 97) and 60-69 years (n = 73). The inclusion criteria were not having participated of systematic motor intervention in the six months prior to the study period; not presenting motor or cognitive impairments that could impair the performance of evaluation protocols and absence of comorbidities that could prevent or limit evaluations. The group aged 50-59 years showed mean values of 55.6 ± 2.9 years for age, 54.0 ± 21.1 mIU / ml for FSH, 11.3 ± 1.8 seconds for coordination 20.2 ± 4.0 repetitions for strength, 51.9 ± 11.8 cm for flexibility, 23.0 ± 2.4 seconds for speed and 497 ± 39 seconds for aerobic resistance. The group aged 60-69 years showed mean values of 64.2 ± 2.8 years of age, 54.9 ± 16.1 mIU / ml for FSH, 11.5 ± 2.5 seconds for coordination, 20.2 ± 4.3 repetitions for strength, 54.4 ± 10.9 cm for flexibility, 24.5 ± 4.0 seconds for speed and 507 ± 47 seconds for aerobic resistance. The proposal of a normative table was made possible with the data analyzed, which is a new reference regarding functional fitness studies especially in physically inactive postmenopausal women.

This study investigated the influence of short and moderate recovery intervals on lipid profiles and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) following exhaustive strength exercise in recreational weightlifters. Seven subjects performed two conditions in a randomized order: short, 90% of one maximum repetition (1RM) and 30-sec rest allowed between sets; moderate, 90% of 1RM and 90-sec rest allowed between sets. Total cholesterol (Chol), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), triacylglycerol (TAG), Chol/HDL-c ratio and PAI-1 concentrations were assessed at baseline, immediately postexercise, and 15- and 30-min postexercise (post-15 and post-30). The LDL-c concentrations decreased and HDL-c concentrations increased in both conditions but without significant differences (LDL-c: 30 sec: pre, 82.0±19.5 mg/dL, immediately, 73.9±16.4 mg/dL, 90 sec: pre, 75.9±30.8 mg/dL, immediately, 66.2±35.5 mg/dL, P=0.423; HDL-c: 30 sec: pre, 53.5±9.2 mg/dL, immediately, 61.4±11.4 mg/dL; 90 sec: pre, 55.8±11.1 mg/dL, immediately, 84.9±27.8, mg/dL; P=0.146). On the other hand, PAI-1 had a tendency to decrease only in the 90-sec condition (pre, 7,754.9±2,927.7 pg/mL; immediately, 5,313.1±4,637.4 pg/mL; P=0.085). There was a positive correlation between PAI-1 and Chol (30 sec: r=0.83, 90 sec: r=0.91; P<0.05), PAI-1 and fat-free mass in both conditions (30 sec post-15: r=0.79, post-30: r=081, P<0.05; 90 sec immediately: r=0.77, post-15: r=0.81; P<0.05), and PAI-1 and TAG only in 30 sec (r=0.87, P<0.05). Short and moderate intervals of recovery improve lipid profiles after heavy strength exercise but only 90 sec induced greater improved in PAI-1 concentration in recreational weightlifters.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: to analize the level of functional fitness of a group of postmenopausal women in the city of Presidente Prudente using the set of functional fitness tests of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and to check whether there are differences between groups of women in the fifth and sixth decade of life. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 175 postmenopausal women (follicle stimulating hormone level>26.72 mIU/L) in the city of Presidente Prudente in 2013. The inclusion criteria were not being part of any type of systematic motor intervention for at least six months before the collection of research data; absence of motor or cognitive impairment that would prevent the evaluation protocols, and absence of chronic or degenerative disease, musculoskeletal injury or comorbidity that could prevent or limit the evaluations. The women were evaluated by the same trained examiners. The 50 to 59 year group showed a mean age of 55.3 ± 4.5 years, mean FSH values of 53.5 ± 21.1 mIU/mL, mean coordination of 11.4 ± 2.2 seconds, mean strength of 20.1 ± 3.9 repetitions, mean flexibility of 51.7 ± 11.8 cm, mean 23.2 ± 2.8 seconds agility and mean aerobic resistance of 500 ± 43/2. The 60 to 69 year group had a mean age of 65.1 ± 4.1 years with FSH 54.9 ± 15.9, 11.6 ± 2.6 seconds coordination, strength 20.3 ± 4.7 repetitions, 54.6 ± 11.2 cm flexibility, agility 24.7 ± 4.3 seconds, and aerobic resistance of 508 ± 51 seconds. CONCLUSION: It was possible to analyze the functional fitness of postmenopausal women through the set of the American Alliance testing for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance with no significant differences between groups for the variables strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity and coordination, and with only the speed variable showing significant differences. We recommend further studies seeking to formulate normative values for the population in question.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of functional training on body composition in postmenopausal women. METHODS: The study was conducted on 38 postmenopausal women, divided into two groups: Training Group (TG) and Control Group (CG). TG women (n = 21) performed a program of physical exercise for a period of 8 weeks, 3 times a week on nonconsecutive days, with 90 minutes per session. For the same period, CG women (n = 17) did not perform any systematic physical activity. All participants were assessed at baseline and after 8 weeks. The evaluations were performed by the same trained raters. Analysis of body composition was performed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), which allows estimation of body composition in the whole body and by segment. TG participants performed a functional exercise program 3 days a week (non-consecutive), with 11 stations consisting of exercises developed in circuit format sessions. The objectives of the exercises were the development of strength, agility, coordination and proprioception, followed by aerobic exercise (walking). After normality of the data was determined by the Shapiro-Wilk test (p < 0.05), we applied the Student t-test for independent samples to check for possible differences in anthropometric variables and body composition between groups at both times of intervention (pre and post-test). All analyses were performed using the SPSS software v. 17.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) with the level of significance set at 5%. RESULTS: At baseline, no significant difference was observed between groups regarding anthropometric body variables or age composition, indicating homogeneity of the groups. After 8 weeks of training, significant differences were observed between TG and CG regarding fat - CG = 0.2 ± 0.7 and TG = -0.4 ± 0.5, total body fat (kg) - CG = 0.2 ± 1.3 and TG = -0.7 ± 0.8, and total weight - CG = 0.4 ± 1.4 and TG = -0.6 ± 1.1. Percent body fat was reduced in terms of absolute values, although without significance: CG = 0.1 ± 1.5 and TG = -0.8 ± 1.5. CONCLUSION: Functional training in circuit format can be used as a strategy to alter body composition in postmenopausal women, particularly in terms of reduction of adipose tissue. This is a model that promotes high adhesion on the part of the participants, suggesting that it is an attractive proposal for the investigated age group.
